99TH FLYING TRAINING SQUADRON
Our Lineage
Foundation
The 99th was originally formed as the U.S. Army Air Forces' first African American fighter squadron, then known as the 99th Pursuit Squadron. The 99th PS was later recategorized as the 99th Fighter Squadron assigned to fly the P-51 Mustang. The personnel received their initial flight training at Tuskegee, Alabama, earning them the nickname Tuskegee Airmen.
T-1 Mission Accomplishment
For the last 31 years, the 99th Flying Training Squadron has been the sole USAF squadron to create, educate, and develop over 2,000 T-1 instructor pilots tasked with teaching airmanship and basic pilot skills to undergraduate pilots and combat system operators across 4 installations for Air Education and Training Command.
Future
The 99th Flying Training Squadron will continue to train, educate, and develop the USAF's top instructor pilots in the Department of Defense's newest training platform, the T-7A Red Hawk. The Tuskegee Airmen legacy of excellence will prevail as the 99th moves back to its fighter roots.
